A 35-year old man was arrested after a domestic incident in Summerville over the past weekend. Patrick Smith was arrested and charged with Battery Family Violence Act (FVA) following an incident at a residence on Seventh Street, according to the Summerville Police Department. Officer Joshua Mitchell of the Summerville PD responded to a call regarding a domestic problem on Seventh Street. Upon arrival, Summerville Police made contact with the victim, who alleged that Smith had assaulted her. According to the incident report, the woman exhibited visible injuries, including swelling, bruising, and discoloration on the upper left portion of her forehead, consistent with being struck. The victim stated that an argument erupted when she and her grandmother were preparing to leave the residence. The victim told police that Smith struck her with an open hand on the left side of her face, grabbed her hair, and then repeatedly punched her in the forehead. Smith reportedly admitted to the assault, citing his frustration over constantly caring for the victim’s children and her alleged neglect of them. The victim declined immediate medical treatment at the scene, stating her lack of childcare options, but indicated she would seek medical attention at the Chattooga County Emergency Department later. Smith was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Chattooga County Jail on the charge of Battery under the Family Violence Act.

Zachary Ace Bryan, of Rising Fawn in Dade County, was booked into the Floyd County Jail on Sunday following a traffic stop that led to the discovery of cocaine, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. According to Floyd County Jail records, police stopped Bryan’s vehicle after he allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of Lombardy Way and Flannery Street. During a subsequent consent search of the vehicle, officers discovered two clear plastic bags protruding from a wallet located in the front seat. Authorities say one bag contained cocaine, while the other contained a substance suspected to be methamphetamine. In addition to the drugs, officers also allegedly found a pipe used for smoking methamphetamine in Bryan’s pants pocket. Bryan is now facing charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of cocaine, possession of drug-related objects, and a stop sign violation.

An accident on Monday morning at the intersection of Commerce Street and West Washington Street was caused by a vehicle running a red light, according to a report released on Tuesday by the Summerville Police Department.

Northwest Georgia residents should exercise caution during their morning commute as areas of fog are reducing visibility to a half-mile or less in some areas. The National Weather Service advises drivers to be aware of the potential for reduced visibility, especially before 9:00 AM. Relief is on the way, however. A frontal boundary pushing in from Alabama and Tennessee will bring a drying trend to the region over the next few days. Adding to the potential for stormy conditions, another mid-level disturbance moving quickly through the Ohio Valley between Friday and Saturday will further enhance moisture return, increasing shower and thunderstorm chances throughout the weekend.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced that the state’s net tax collections for May reached $2.69 billion, marking a 9.1% increase ($224 million) compared to May of last year. This surge was partly fueled by an extension granted for tax filings following a recent hurricane, enabling more taxpayers to meet the May 1st deadline. The year-to-date tax revenue for Georgia now stands at $30.46 billion, a $536.2 million increase, primarily attributed to the motor fuel excise tax, which was temporarily suspended earlier in the year. Breaking down the revenue streams, Individual Income Taxes reached approximately $1.33 billion, an 8.3% increase compared to last year, propelled by higher return payments. Sales and Use Taxes also demonstrated strong growth, rising by 4.9% to a total of around $1.6 billion. Notably, Corporate Income Tax collections experienced a dramatic surge, growing by 70.8% to $121.2 million. Modest increases were also observed in Motor Fuel Taxes and Motor Vehicle fees. “These figures paint a clear picture of a strong and resilient Georgia economy,” stated Governor Kemp in a press release. “The increase in tax revenue is a testament to our pro-business policies and the hard work of Georgians across the state.
