Accident Saturday On Highway 27 Near Taylor’s Ridge

The Georgia State Patrol has released a report about an accident on Saturday on Highway 27 at the foot Taylor’s Ridge. According to troopers, the accident involved a vehicle being driven by a seventeen-year-old Armuchee teenager and a pickup truck driven by a Huntsville, Alabama woman. Troopers say that the vehicle driven by the teenager began to hydroplane near the intersection of Sloppy Floyd Lake Road. The driver over corrected and crossed over into the path of an oncoming Ford F-150 truck. The driver of the first vehicle and two teenage passengers were transported to a hospital in Rome with minor injuries.

We are waking up to temperatures in the mid-50’s this morning and the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia has issued a Flood Watch that is in place until 7 PM this evening. Heavy rain is expected today, with the possibility of some thunderstorms. The heavy rains could produce excessive runoff which would lead to the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and low-lying areas. Between one and two inches of rain is expected. Tonight, we could have thunderstorms early and gusty winds. It’s looking better for Tuesday when we will see sunny skies and highs in the mid-50’s. The rest of the workweek looks mainly dry with temperatures warming into the low 60’s and lows overnight in the low 40’s through Friday.

Man’s Ear Slashed During Domestic Dispute

Summerville Police are investigating a domestic dispute that happened last Thursday on Seventh Street. Officers were called to the scene and spoke with the victim, identified as Rickey Powell in police reports. Mr. Powell told officers that he had been involved in a domestic dispute with a woman he identified as “Ri Ri Perry”. The victim said that the assailant had sliced his ear with a knife while the two were arguing. Police were able to speak with the alleged assailant after county deputies found her at a residence on West Summerville Road. The woman told officers that she had been at home all day with her children. However, police learned that she was dropped off at a residence near where the alleged assault took place earlier that day. Because of conflicting stories, the incident was turned over to an investigator and no arrests were made.

County Attorney Memorandum On Subdivision Ordinance

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry has defended his new subdivision ordinance that replaced the hastily adopted 2022 Land Use Ordinance. The commissioner maintains that the new ordinance is more focused in scope and takes care of many of the issues that the old land use ordinance had regarding individual property rights. A memorandum from the county’s attorney that was sent to County Code Enforcer B.J. Hall and the Chattooga County Planning Commission, indicates that the county attorney believes that the new ordinance will be limited to “subdivision developments, multi-family developments and commercial developments”.

Life Saving Valor Awards Presented To Local Emergency Workers

The Trion Fire Department presented Life Saving Valor Awards at a ceremony at the Chattooga County Agricultural Center for a residential structure fire that occurred in Trion on January 10, 2024. The home was over 60% involved in the fire and had zero visibility due to all the smoke. All emergency personnel involved worked as a team to successfully rescue and save the life of a local resident.

Governor & DNR Announces 2024 Forestry For Wildlife Partners

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp and Georgia Department of Natural Resources leaders recognized four corporate forest landowners today for their stewardship and land management practices benefiting wildlife across the state. Forest Investment Associates, Georgia Power, Weyerhaeuser and PotlatchDeltic were named DNR’s 2024 Forestry for Wildlife partners.
