A Rome man arrested at his Nixon Avenue home Monday on charges of aggravated assault and 1st-degree cruelty to children is facing more charges.
The Chattooga County Historical Society will be meeting Sunday at 2pm at the depot in Summerville. Everyone is invited. The program will be about the film “ Her Name was Hester.” Hester Scoggins was born into slavery in Georgia. She was a wet nurse for the Scoggins family in Dirt Town Valley in the county. More than a century after her passing, the descendants of Hester and her enslavers lived as neighbors and friends unaware of their shared history until 2021. We have invited Betty and Melvin Mosley and Stacie Scoggins Marshall to come and share the stories of how they came together for the film and the founding of Hester’s Heritage Foundation. We will be screening the special preview trailer of the movie. Join us as they tell their story and respond to questions. Learning the good and bad of our past can guide us to become better friends and neighbors today.

Local Scouts will be having a food collection event this coming Saturday in Summerville. Pack 38, Troop 7B, and Troop 7G will be collecting non perishable items thru a Drive Thru Collection site on Saturday Feb 10 from 10 AM until Noon on Ralph Stanley Drive between the Scout Hut and the Tennis Courts. Friday, March 29, 2024 is a national holiday recognizing Vietnam War Veterans Day. This marks the 51st year since the last combat troops left Vietnam. During the war, 9 million men and women served in the US armed forces. Of those veterans, 234,000 were from Georgia.
The University of West Georgia has moved its prison education program out of the experimental stage to become the only higher education institution in the University System of Georgia – and one of the very few in a maximum-level security prison in the country – to offer a four-year undergraduate degree program to individuals who are incarcerated.
A forty-three-year-old woman and her seventeen-year-old son were arrested by Summerville Police after a traffic stop on Tuesday. Police say that they stopped the vehicle that was being driven by Jordan Grady Roan for traffic violations.
There’s Hope for the Hungry will be at Central Avenue Baptist Church in Trion today to give away free groceries. Come between the hours of 10:00 am and 1:00 pm to get your free groceries. No ID is required. But you must be present to receive the food. The church is located at 14074 Highway 27 in Trion.
Audio of an exchange between Republican candidate for commissioner Andy Allen and Chattooga County’s Attorney Chris Corbin indicates that the subdivision ordinance adopted by Commissioner Blake Elsberry does not protect property buyers. The commissioner says that he differs with the county attorney’s opinion about the ordinance.
