On Thursday of this week, the Georgia Senate passed Senate Bill 386 to regulate and tax sports betting under the oversight of the Georgia Lottery Commission. The measure, sponsored by Sen. Clint Dixon (R – Gwinnett), will allocate the proceeds to student financial aid programs, including the HOPE college scholarship and Georgia Pre-K programs.
The American Red Cross is facing a blood shortage and is encouraging those who are eligible to donate blood as soon as possible.
Weather permitting, utility crews will be moving power lines and setting power poles along I-75 at exits 312 and 315.
The work will require rolling road lane closures that will periodically close all the lanes in one direction for a brief time throughout the weekend.
Crews will work in the northbound lanes at the two exits first then move to the southbound lanes. They will finish on Sunday.
WHEN: From Saturday, February 3 at 8 a.m. through Sunday, February 4th.
WHERE: The northbound lanes of I-75 will be periodically closed at exits 312 and 315 (the closures should only last a few minutes each time).
Once the northbound lanes are completed, the southbound lanes at the same exits will be closed periodically.
The Chattooga Young Farmers are hosting a Dairy Show today at the Chattooga County Ag Building, located on Middle School Drive off Highway 100 in Summerville. The dairy show will get underway at noon today. The Chattooga County FFA Dairy Show Team will be selling concessions and there will be a cow patty bingo contest to help the local dairy show team raise money for washing stations. A forty-year-old Walker County woman was arrested on drug charges after she filed a report with the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office about a collision with a deer while she was returning home from Cherokee County, Alabama.
Chattooga County Probate Judge Gary Woods says that it is not clear what would happen if a prospective Republican candidate is not approved by the five-person GOP committee that will be holding a vetting session to pre-qualify candidates tomorrow.

A local contractor reported the theft of several items to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office on January 28th. Junior Villeda with Villeda Concrete told a responding deputy that someone had broken into a trailer that he used store tools and material on the Lyerly Highway. Villeda said that the thieves took three Husqvarna chainsaws, a Stihl chainsaw and a 70″ television from the trailer. The responding deputy said that he saw several marks on the door where it appeared someone had pried the door open. In all, the missing items totaled $2600. The incident was referred to an investigator with the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office.
Pre-K registration for Trion Elementary School begins Tuesday, February 20th for all students wishing to enroll in the 2024-2025 school year. Parents/Legal Guardians may stop by the elementary office beginning February 20th to pick up enrollment packets and turn in required documentation.
