Northwest Georgia residents are waking up to cloudy skies today and there is a chance of rain and scattered thunderstorms with no expected severe weather, a potential for severe weather is developing for Saturday afternoon and evening.
Trion High School’s Sam Mobbs has won the GHSA Slam Dunk Contest championship. The finals occurred last Saturday at the Macon Coliseum and featured the top three dunkers in Georgia. Mobbs, a standout from the Class of 2026 for the Trion Bulldogs, impressed both judges and the crowd with his aerial skills to secure the title. He competed against Jalyn Sweat from Bradwell Institute and Olurermi Guerro from Druid Hills, who also reached the finals after a preliminary round. Mobbs showed confidence before the contest, noting his dunks looked better than those of his competitors. He credited his success to a strong support system, especially his mother’s help. Mobbs also considered strategic factors, like the order of competitors, for his dunk choices. Mobbs averaged 22. 3 points, 6. 1 rebounds, and 2. 6 blocks per game for the Trion Bulldogs. Apart from basketball, enjoys math and playing NBA 2K25. The GHSA Slam Dunk/3-Point Contest took place from March 6-8 at the Macon Coliseum.

As spring arrives in Georgia, Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper is calling on residents to be vigilant in spotting and reporting embryo nests of the invasive Yellow-Legged Hornet (YLH). These nests, which typically appear in March and April, are about the size of a ping-pong or tennis ball and are often found in sheltered areas like under eaves.
Local veterans advocates Odell Anderson and Barbara Massey Reece are extending an invitation to all veterans who served in the U.S. military during the Vietnam era (November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975) to a special luncheon on Friday, March 28, 2025. The luncheon will take place at 12 noon at the Chattooga County Memorial Home, located at 818 Memorial Drive in Summerville. Organizers encourage all Vietnam veterans to attend and bring their families for a time of food, fellowship, and remembrance. The event precedes National Vietnam War Veterans Day, observed on Saturday, March 29th. This national holiday commemorates the day the last combat troops departed Vietnam on March 29, 1973. It serves as a day to honor the nine million Americans who served during the Vietnam War, whether in-country or at supporting posts around the world. The City of Summerville Water Department will be repairing water lines and performing maintenance work on Highland Ave on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. During this time, customers may experience low water pressure.

Chicken farm, poultry production, domestic animal feeding
The legal battle surrounding Rocking S. Farm LLC’s proposed chicken houses in Gore continues with another hearing scheduled for 9 AM on March 19th at the Chattooga County Courthouse. Superior Court Judge Don Thompson previously issued a preliminary order on February 26th, preventing Chattooga County from taking action against Dustin Smith, owner of Rocking S. Farm LLC, who seeks to construct four chicken houses on Gore-Subligna Road near Highway 27.
The Town of Trion has unanimously decided to settle a federal lawsuit related to PFAS water contamination by paying $250,000. This settlement addresses claims made by Earl Parris Jr. against Trion, Mount Vernon Mills, 3M, and other parties during a town council meeting. The lawsuit claims that PFAS, known as “forever chemicals,” contaminated the local drinking water.
The Georgia State Patrol says that an overturned vehicle on Highway 27 on Taylor’s Ridge last Friday was caused by the driver having a medical emergency. The Georgia State Patrol Public Information Office told WZQZ News on Sunday evening that the driver was headed northbound on Highway 27, near the top of the ridge when he became ill. State Troopers say that the driver passed out and ran off the roadway, hit a clump of trees and the the pickup truck he was driving overturned. The accident is still under investigation and the name of the driver has not been released.
The Summerville City Council will meet this evening at Summerville City Hall for its regular monthly meeting. Before the official meeting, Mayor Harry Harvey and the City Council will have a question and answer session with the public starting at 4:30 PM.
