Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) announces the appointments of Eddie Elsberry, Melissa Free, Kristine Godfrey and Matt Sawhill to its Board of Directors. The new members bring a diverse range of experience and expertise to the board, further strengthening GNTC’s commitment to serving the communities within its nine-county service area. Elsberry served on the Chattooga County Board of Education for 18 years, including serving as chairman.
Georgia gas prices continue to decline, with the state average now sitting at $2.98 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. This marks a decrease of 6 cents compared to last week, offering a welcome break for drivers after weeks of fluctuating prices. While still 8 cents higher than a month ago, the current average is a significant 45 cents lower than the same time last year. Filling a 15-gallon tank now costs approximately $44.70, saving Georgians nearly $7.00 compared to last year’s prices. “Several factors contributed to the drop in gas prices,” explained Montrae Waiters, AAA-The Auto Club Group spokeswoman. “Lower crude oil prices, demand has tapered off now that Spring Break has ended in Georgia, and a hefty gasoline supply in the U.S. are all playing a role.” Gas prices vary across the state, with Floyd County averaging $2.90, Chattooga County at $2.92, Gordon County at $2.95, and Walker County offering the lowest local average at $2.88. Just across the state line in Alabama, DeKalb County is averaging $2.81 and Cherokee County $2.82.

A tragic two-vehicle collision in Rock Springs, Georgia, has claimed the lives of two individuals and left one seriously injured, Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson confirmed earlier today.
The incident occurred on Highway 27 near Industrial Drive. According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), who are currently investigating the scene, a gray Toyota Tacoma was traveling south on Highway 27 in the left lane when the accident unfolded. “The driver of the Tacoma abruptly steered left into the left northbound lane, struck the front of a gray Jeep Renegade, also traveling north, with the front of the Tacoma,” GSP stated in their preliminary report. The impact caused the Tacoma to overturn.
A black Nissan Rogue, which was traveling north in the right northbound lane behind the Renegade, attempted to avoid the collision. However, the Rogue struck the driver-side rear of the overturned Tacoma. Tragically, the drivers of both the Toyota Tacoma and the Jeep Renegade were pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. Another person was injured and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition remains unknown at this time.
The GSP is continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident. Further updates will be provided as they become available.

The National Weather Service has issued a high fire danger warning for Northwest Georgia this afternoon and evening due to critically low relative humidity and strong winds. Relative humidity levels are expected to dip to 25% or less for at least four hours, combined with northwest winds blowing at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 25 mph. Isolated gusts up to 30 mph are possible for a few hours this afternoon. These conditions, coupled with dry fuels, create a significant risk for rapidly spreading wildfires. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid any activities that could spark a fire, such as outdoor burning or using equipment that could create sparks. Today, we will see mostly sunny skies, with highs in the mid to upper 60’s. A mostly dry cold front is moving through the area today, bringing cooler and drier air in its wake. Wednesday will see morning lows in the 40’s (upper 30’s in higher elevations) and pleasant afternoon temperatures in the mid-60’s to low 70’s. While winds will be less gusty, another Fire Danger Statement may be necessary due to the continued dry air. A warming trend is expected through the weekend, with rain possible early next week. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and fire safety precautions.
