In a press release issued on Tuesday evening, Chattooga County Commissioner Andy Allen announced that all county offices will be closed on Friday, January 10, 2025, in anticipation of severe weather expected to hit Northwest Georgia. The decision comes as part of a coordinated effort involving Atrium Health, the Emergency Management Agency, the Georgia Department of Transportation, local Public Works Departments, and surrounding municipalities to ensure the safety of residents during the impending weather event.

Chattooga County State Court Judge Jon Dennis says that State Court is still being held on Thursday, January 9, 2025 – however, State Court for Friday, January 10, 2025 has been cancelled due to the impending weather.

In honor of former President Jimmy Carter, President Biden has declared a National Day of Mourning for tomorrow, January 9, 2025.  President Carter’s state funeral will be conducted a the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.  Local postal officials want to remind residents that all U.S. Post Offices will be closed on Thursday.  Following the state funeral, President Carter’s body will be flown back to Georgia and there will be a private service at his home church, Maranatha Baptist, in Plains.  President Carter will then be buried at his home in downtown Plains, about a mile from Maranatha Baptist where he and his wife were members.

Residents of Chattooga County, along with all of Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama, should prepare for significant winter weather as the National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Winter Storm Watch from 7 AM on Friday until 7 AM on Saturday. The announcement was made shortly before 4 AM today, signaling the approach of a major winter storm that could impact local communities.

* WHAT...A wintry mix of precipitation is possible. Snow and sleet
  accumulations in the mountains could average between three to six
  inches with locally higher amounts possible. Further south to the
  Interstate 20 corridor, a mixture of snow, sleet, freezing rain
  and rain is likely. Snow accumulations of two to four inches is
  possible with icing amounts around a tenth of an inch possible.


* WHERE...Portions of north central, northeast, northwest, and west
  central Georgia.

* WHEN...From Friday morning through Saturday morning.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions, with travel likely
  becoming difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the
  Friday commute and linger into Saturday morning. Bridges and
  overpasses could become icy even if temperatures remain slightly
  above freezing.
