The dental hygiene program at Georgia Highlands College (GHC) is celebrating its 25th anniversary and has grown exponentially from its humble roots to one of the institution’s most popular degree programs.
A routine traffic stop turned into a significant drug bust on Monday when officers arrested a Centre, Alabama man for multiple drug charges. According to records from the Floyd County Jail, officers initiated the stop on a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Patrick La’Don Steen Jr. for failing to operate with headlights on North Broad Street near Russell Street. Upon stopping the vehicle, officers conducted a search following a positive indication from a K9 unit. The search resulted in the seizure of illegal substances, including cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms, and marijuana, as well as a 9mm pistol. Steen now faces several charges, including possession of cocaine, possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and a violation related to the headlight infraction.

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry announced on Monday that county governmental offices will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, November 27th, Thanksgiving Day, November 28th and Friday, November 29th in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday. Chattooga Transit will not operate those days as well. The Chattooga County Transfer Station will be closed Thanksgiving Day only. Normal office hours will resume on Monday, December 2, 2024.
A review of the 2024 election results showed that Chattooga County had the biggest increase in support for the Republican presidential nominee over the past 16 years in Northwest Georgia. Donald Trump garnered 82% of the vote. In 2020, Trump had 80.24% – making him the first Republican candidate to get over 80% of the county’s votes. In the past 50 years, the only other candidate to get that large of a majority in Chattooga County was Georgia-born Jimmy Carter in 1976. Carter carried the county again in 1980 with just over 70% of the votes.
On Monday, the Georgia Department of Labor released a statement on the passing of Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson. The 59-year-old Republican lost a battle with pancreatic cancer on Sunday. Thompson is being remembered for his service in the Army National Guard and as an entrepreneur along with being a person committed to his family and his faith. It is Thanksgiving week, and more than two million Georgians are expected to be traveling on roads and highways
The Thanksgiving holiday travel period takes place during the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) “Click It, Don’t Risk It” seat belt awareness campaign. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety will ask everyone to “Join the Click” by wearing their seat belt on every trip and making sure all children under eight years of age are riding in a properly installed child safety seat that meets the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines for the child’s height and weight.
Georgia gas prices remains steadfast, holding its ground at the fuel stations, unchanged from the previous week. Georgians pay an average of $2.93 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). It costs drivers an average price of $43.95 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline.
Excitement is building in Trion as the Bulldogs prepare to take on Irwin County this Friday night in the GHSA Football Playoffs Quarterfinal. The highly anticipated match will kick off at 7:00 PM at Sam R. McCain Stadium, promising an evening of thrilling high school football. Fans eager to support the Bulldogs can purchase tickets for the game at a price of $14 per ticket. Tickets are available for purchase online at GoFans ( HERE ), or can be bought at the gate on game day. However, attendees are advised that cash will only be accepted at the front gate for ticket purchases, while concessions will accept both cash and card payments. Updated information for the game emphasizes that only GHSA passes will be accepted. Additionally, holders of season passes or reserved seats are required to buy a ticket for entry. As the Bulldogs prepare for their showdown against Irwin County, the community is encouraged to come out and show their support. A Walker County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in an accident on Highway 27 on Monday evening, shortly before 5 PM. First responders were routing traffic through the parking lot near Little Caesar’s Pizza while law enforcement worked the accident that involved at least one other vehicle. WZQZ News will have more information on the accident when a report is released by the Georgia State Patrol.
