A review of the 2024 election results showed that Chattooga County had the biggest increase in support for the Republican presidential nominee over the past 16 years in Northwest Georgia. Donald Trump garnered 82% of the vote.  In 2020, Trump had 80.24% – making him the first Republican candidate to get over 80% of the county’s votes.  In the past 50 years, the only other candidate to get that large of a majority in Chattooga County was Georgia-born Jimmy Carter in 1976.  Carter carried the county again in 1980 with just over 70% of the votes.

On Monday, the Georgia Department of Labor released a statement on the passing of Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson.  The 59-year-old Republican lost a battle with pancreatic cancer on Sunday.  Thompson is being remembered for his service in the Army National Guard and as an entrepreneur along with being a person committed to his family and his faith.  You can read the statement from the Georgia Department of Labor below:

It is Thanksgiving week, and more than two million Georgians are expected to be traveling on roads and highways

The Thanksgiving holiday travel period takes place during the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) “Click It, Don’t Risk It” seat belt awareness campaign.  The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety will ask everyone to “Join the Click” by wearing their seat belt on every trip and making sure all children under eight years of age are riding in a properly installed child safety seat that meets the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines for the child’s height and weight.

Georgia gas prices  remains steadfast, holding its ground at the fuel stations, unchanged from the previous week. Georgians pay an average of $2.93 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). It costs drivers an average price of $43.95 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline.

Excitement is building in Trion as the Bulldogs prepare to take on Irwin County this Friday night in the GHSA Football Playoffs Quarterfinal. The highly anticipated match will kick off at 7:00 PM at Sam R. McCain Stadium, promising an evening of thrilling high school football. Fans eager to support the Bulldogs can purchase tickets for the game at a price of $14 per ticket. Tickets are available for purchase online at GoFans ( HERE ), or can be bought at the gate on game day. However, attendees are advised that cash will only be accepted at the front gate for ticket purchases, while concessions will accept both cash and card payments. Updated information for the game emphasizes that only GHSA passes will be accepted. Additionally, holders of season passes or reserved seats are required to buy a ticket for entry. As the Bulldogs prepare for their showdown against Irwin County, the community is encouraged to come out and show their support.  If you can’t make it out to the game on Friday, WZQZ will be broadcasting the game live.

A Walker County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in an accident on Highway 27 on Monday evening, shortly before 5 PM.  First responders were routing traffic through the parking lot near Little Caesar’s Pizza while law enforcement worked the accident that involved at least one other vehicle.  WZQZ News will have more information on the accident when a report is released by the Georgia State Patrol.

Solar power advocates in Georgia are renewing a push for legislation that would let Georgia Power customers buy electricity from third-party providers of solar energy. A bill that would open the door to so-called community solar projects in the Peach State failed to gain traction in the General Assembly during this years legislative session. However, the state House of Representatives created an ad hoc committee to consider the proposal this summer and fall.

In a routine traffic stop, local law enforcement made a drug arrest after a vehicle was observed driving with its headlights off. The incident occurred around 9:14 PM on November 16th, when a Summerville Police Officer noted a dark gray car passing by on Sixth Avenue, which proceeded to make a right turn onto Highland Avenue. Upon stopping the vehicle, it was discovered that the license plate did not match the car, raising immediate suspicion.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson passed away Sunday at the age of 59 after battling pancreatic cancer. Thompson took office in 2023 and inherited a struggling Department of Labor. He uncovered $105 million in mishandled funds and continued working despite his illness.
