A Summerville man fell victim to a social security scam recently. The complainant came to the Summerville Police Department last week and said that he wanted to report that he had been the victim of a scam regarding his social security. He told an officer that someone he believed to be with the Social Security Administration (SSA), called and told him that he was owed back money and convinced him to give them his personal information.

The American Red Cross continues to experience a national blood emergency as remnants of Hurricane Debby and other severe weather events across the country have further complicated efforts to rebuild the nation’s blood supply. Those in unaffected areas are urged to make an appointment to give now.

The Summerville Fire Department responded to a fire on Taylor Street on Sunday. According to Summerville Public Safety Director Brian Ozment, the fire department responded at 10:30 PM and the structure was engulfed when firefighters arrived. The house was not occupied, but did have power. Trey Skelton, Investigator with the Summerville Fire Department, was called to the scene due to suspected arson. A reward is being offered by Georgia Arson Control for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator(s). Georgia gas prices continue to decline at the pumps compared to a week ago. Georgians are paying an average price of $3.15 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was 7 cents less than a week ago, 20 cents less than a month ago, and 43 cents less than this time last year. It costs drivers an average price of $47.25 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Georgians are paying $3.00 less to fill up at the pump compared to a month ago.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) is hosting an Adult Education Open House to provide an opportunity to learn more about the Adult Education programs offered at GNTC, tour the facilities and meet faculty and staff.

The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation continue to investigate a shooting that left four people dead Saturday evening.
