Chattooga County School Nutrition is launching its Summer Feeding Program tomorrow, offering free meals to all children aged 18 and under throughout the county. The program aims to combat childhood hunger during the summer months when school is out of session.
The program will run Monday through Friday, from June 2nd until July 11th, providing a crucial resource for families in need. However, meal service will be suspended during the week of June 30th to July 4th in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Meals will be available at various sites across Chattooga County. The program emphasizes that children must remain on-site to consume the meals provided. “During COVID, we were able to allow meals to be taken home,” explained Brandi Wooten, School Nutrition Director. “However, program rules now require that all food be eaten on site.” These are the same rules that applied to the program before COVID, and it was only because of the pandemic that the food was allowed to be taken offsite.
Wooten also stressed that the program is open to all children residing in Chattooga County, regardless of their family’s income. This inclusive approach ensures that every child has access to nutritious meals during the summer break. This program is a vital lifeline for many families in Chattooga County, providing much-needed support and ensuring children have access to healthy meals throughout the summer.
Residents with questions regarding the Summer Feeding Program are encouraged to contact Brandi Wooten, School Nutrition Director, at 706-859-3054 or via email at bwooten@chattooga.k12.ga.us.
