Three individuals have been arrested in DeKalb County, Alabama following an intensive investigation into the overdose death of 53-year-old Kimberly Ann Little, which occurred on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. The arrests include a charge of Manslaughter-Fentanyl, highlighting the severe consequences of illicit drug activity.
Deputies with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), along with other responding agencies, were dispatched to a medical call in the 100 block of Highway 75. Upon their arrival, Ms. Little was found deceased inside the residence.
According to the DCSO, the presence of drug paraphernalia in plain view immediately raised suspicions, prompting authorities to initiate a drug-related death investigation. A subsequent search warrant for the residence uncovered a cache of illegal substances, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, marijuana, and various other drug paraphernalia.
Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, the following individuals have been arrested and charged:
Vanessa Taylor Whitmoyer: Charged with Manslaughter-Fentanyl, two counts of Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, two counts of Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Tampering with Physical Evidence, 2nd Degree Promoting Prison Contraband, and 2nd Degree Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.
Leland James McDowell: Charged with 1st Degree Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Crystal Lynn Benson: Charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden addressed the gravity of the situation in a statement following the arrests. “Illegal narcotics continue to destroy families and communities and put lives at risk,” Sheriff Welden said. “This case is a reminder of the devastating consequences these substances can have. Our office is dedicated to hold individuals accountable in cases where reckless or illegal actions contribute to the loss of life.”
