Motorists traveling on Interstate 75 southbound are being advised to brace for significant delays on Tuesday, October 7th, as Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) maintenance crews execute necessary shoulder repairs.
GDOT announced Monday that it will close the right southbound lane and shoulder of I-75 for a scheduled maintenance operation during the midday hours.
The work is focused on repairing a damaged section of the highway shoulder between mileposts 292 and 291.
Details of the Closure
The closure is scheduled to begin Tuesday, October 7, at 9:00 a.m. and is expected to conclude by 3:30 p.m.
During this six-and-a-half-hour window, the right southbound lane of I-75 will be completely inaccessible to traffic, leaving only the remaining adjacent lanes open. The precise location of the closure is just south of milepost 292, continuing toward milepost 291.
Maintenance officials stressed that the timing was chosen to avoid the peak hours of the morning and evening commute, though substantial daytime backups are possible.
Driver Warnings
GDOT urges all motorists to prepare for congestion and potential slowdowns resulting from the reduced capacity of the interstate.
“Motorists should expect delays and watch diligently for workers near the roadway in the work zone,” a GDOT spokesperson advised.
Drivers are encouraged to utilize traffic monitoring apps, plan for additional travel time, and be prepared to reduce speeds significantly when approaching the work zone. Failing to heed the reduced speed limits and safety warnings in construction zones puts both drivers and maintenance personnel at risk.
The maintenance operation is categorized as “weather permitting.” If adverse weather conditions prevent safe work on Tuesday, the repairs will be rescheduled.
