Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama are bracing for near-critical fire weather conditions to develop throughout the week, with Wednesday and Thursday being particularly concerning. A shift in weather patterns, bringing cooler and drier air, will heighten these risks.
Currently, high pressure is dominating the Southeast, resulting in clear skies and cool morning temperatures across the region, with lows dipping into the 40s and even the upper 30s in mountainous areas.
A cold front is expected to move through North and Central Georgia this afternoon and evening. While moisture with this system is expected to be minimal, there’s a slight chance (15-20%) of isolated light rain showers and gusty winds across parts of North Georgia. Significant accumulation is not anticipated, and most areas will only see a brief increase in high-level clouds.
Behind this front, a reinforcing wave of cooler and drier air will settle into the region. By Wednesday, high pressure will rebuild, and a significant mid-level trough will position itself over the eastern U.S. This combination of dry conditions and moderating temperatures will significantly increase fire danger.
The cooler trend is expected to persist through the weekend, with temperatures dropping back into the 40s and potentially the upper 30s across much of the area. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and monitor local fire danger advisories during this period.
The next chance for rain is not expected until early next week.
