Georgia has witnessed an unprecedented surge in voter participation as total early voting numbers surpassed the 4 million mark by the close of polls on Friday. A staggering 4,004,588 voters have already cast their ballots, either through early in-person voting or via absentee mail-in ballots, marking a historic 55.3% turnout in the state. During this Early Voting period, Georgians took to the polls in record numbers, with 3,761,968 ballots cast in person and an additional 242,620 ballots submitted by mail.
The turnout is especially noteworthy when compared to previous cycles, with only 1,890,364 voters participating in Early Voting in 2018, and 2,697,822 in 2020. The 2022 election saw 2,289,933 voters take advantage of the early voting opportunity, highlighting the significant increase this year. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger hailed this Early Voting period as the most successful in Georgia’s history, attributing the turnout to public trust in the electoral process. “Four years of progress brought us here. We’re battle-tested and ready, regardless of what the critics say,” said Raffensperger. He emphasized the importance of accountability and vigilance, assuring voters that state and local election officials are closely monitoring the election for any signs of interference. Despite the overwhelming turnout, reports of long lines were minimal. A few popular voting locations in metropolitan areas experienced delays of over 30 minutes, but overall, voters reported a smooth experience.
As early voting has now concluded, those who have yet to cast their ballots are encouraged to confirm their polling locations via My Voter Page and make their voices heard on Election Day, Tuesday, November 5. In a bid to safeguard the electoral process, Raffensperger’s office has identified four individuals who may have violated state law in an attempt to cast multiple ballots during the Early Voting period. Should investigations confirm any wrongdoing, these cases will be referred to local District Attorneys for further action.
With a growing emphasis on transparency and integrity, Georgia officials are committed to ensuring a fair election process as voters prepare for the final push to the polls. As election day approaches, the excitement surrounding this year’s record turnout continues to build, marking a significant moment in Georgia’s electoral history.
