A new report confirms that Georgia Highlands College (GHC) continues to be a powerful economic engine for Northwest Georgia, with its total economic impact soaring to $214 million in fiscal year 2024. The latest analysis from the University System of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth reveals significant increases across every major economic category compared to the previous fiscal year.

According to a GHC press release outlining the findings, the college’s contributions to the region’s economy saw substantial growth:

  • Total Economic Impact: GHC generated an impressive $214 million in economic impact in FY 2024, an increase from $206 million in FY 2023.
  • Employment Impact: The college supported 2,131 jobs across Northwest Georgia in FY 2024, up from 2,047 jobs in FY 2023.
  • Value-Added Impact: GHC’s contribution to the region’s gross product reached $147 million in FY 2024, compared to $140 million the previous year.
  • Labor Income: The institution helped generate $98 million in household income for area residents in FY 2024, a rise from $95 million in FY 2023.

“These results show that Georgia Highlands College continues to be a vital part of our regional economy,” said GHC President Mike Hobbs. “Every dollar invested in our students and our campuses creates a ripple effect of jobs, business growth, and stronger communities across Northwest Georgia.”

The report underscores how GHC’s influence extends far beyond its classrooms. Spending by students, faculty, and staff, along with the college’s institutional operations, directly fuels job creation and provides crucial support for local businesses. The analysis highlights a significant multiplier effect, noting that for every job on campus, multiple additional jobs are created in the surrounding communities.

As Georgia Highlands College continues to expand its diverse degree offerings and grow its enrollment, the institution remains steadfast in its commitment to preparing students for high-demand careers while simultaneously strengthening the economic health and vibrancy of the region it serves.
