The Georgia Lottery continues to be a powerhouse for education funding in the state, consistently delivering record-breaking profits year after year. In fiscal year 2023 alone, the lottery generated over $1.5 billion for Georgia’s schools, pushing its total contribution to education since inception to a staggering $26.8 billion. For eight consecutive years, the Georgia Lottery has surpassed the $1 billion mark in annual profits dedicated to education, solidifying its position as a vital funding source for key programs.
By law, the majority of the Lottery’s revenue is earmarked for educational initiatives, with the HOPE Scholarship and Georgia’s Pre-K program being the primary beneficiaries. The HOPE Scholarship provides invaluable opportunities for Georgia students to pursue higher education, while the Pre-K program lays a strong foundation for the state’s youngest learners. While lottery proceeds are allocated across several areas, roughly half are used to fund prizes, with approximately one-third directly contributing to education. The remainder covers operating and marketing costs, ensuring the Lottery’s continued success and revenue generation. The Georgia Lottery Corporation (GLC) generates its revenue primarily through ticket sales, including draw games, scratch-offs, and online games. Additionally, a portion of net revenues from the regulation of Class B Coin Operated Amusement Machines (COAM) is also contributed to the lottery.
From scholarships that open doors to higher education to early learning programs that prepare young minds, the Georgia Lottery remains a cornerstone of educational funding in the state, impacting countless lives and contributing to a brighter future for Georgia’s students.
