A grand jury has formally indicted an inmate at Hays State Prison, Hector DeJesus Torres, in connection with the fatal stabbing of a fellow prisoner inside the facility last year.

According to a Chattooga County Grand Jury indictment released Tuesday, Torres is accused of killing 29-year-old Quintez Deshon Smith during an incident that occurred around 1 a.m. on August 29, 2022, in the prison’s A-dormitory.

The indictment charges Torres with multiple offenses, including malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, and participating in a riot within a penal institution.

The victim, Quintez Deshon Smith, was a resident of the metro-Atlanta area. He had been incarcerated since October 2016 and was serving a 15-year sentence for armed robbery and other related offenses.

Torres is currently serving a staggering sentence from a previous murder conviction in Richmond County, Georgia. He was just 19 years old when found guilty of that murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole, plus five additional life sentences and 100 years behind bars. In that earlier case, Torres was convicted of murder, aggravated sodomy, attempted rape, aggravated assault, four counts of armed robbery, and six weapon violations.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the recent stabbing or whether other inmates were involved in the incident. The Georgia Department of Corrections has also not released a public statement regarding the indictment or the ongoing investigation.
