The City of Summerville Fire Department will continue its hydrant flushing and maintenance schedule today, Monday, July 21, 2025 through Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Work will be conducted daily between 8 AM and 3 PM.

During this period, Fire Department employees will perform a series of essential tasks on each hydrant across the city. These include:

  • Lubrication: To ensure all moving parts are functional.
  • Flushing: To clear sediment and debris from water lines, which can accumulate over time.
  • Function Check: To verify that each hydrant operates correctly and provides adequate water flow for emergency situations.

This preventative maintenance is a vital part of maintaining the city’s fire suppression system, ensuring that firefighters have reliable access to water when responding to incidents.

Affected Areas: The primary areas that will experience the flushing process include South East Summerville, specifically:

  • Bellah Avenue area
  • Selman Avenue area
  • Highway 27 area

What Residents Should Expect: The City of Summerville advises residents in the affected areas that they may notice brief periods of water discoloration during the flushing process. This is a completely normal and safe occurrence, resulting from the stirring of sediment within the water mains.

If water discoloration occurs, residents are advised to simply run their cold water tap for a few minutes until the water clears. The water remains safe for household use.

The City of Summerville extends its appreciation for the cooperation and understanding of its residents as they carry out this vital work to keep the community protected and prepared.
