As families across the area prepare for backyard barbecues, poolside gatherings, and dazzling fireworks displays to celebrate Independence Day, local officials are reminding the public to prioritize safety to ensure the holiday remains a time of joy, not tragedy.
Experts warn that the Fourth of July often sees a spike in preventable accidents, leading to injuries and property damage.
“While this holiday is a time for joy and celebration, it also sees an increase in home insurance claims due to fires, water-related incidents, and other risks,” said Montrae Waiters, a spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group. “With so many activities happening at home, it’s crucial for individuals to take preventive measures to safeguard their property and loved ones.”
Grilling Without the Grief
Nothing says Independence Day like a backyard barbecue, but with July being the peak month for grill-related fires, caution is key. Homeowners are advised to:
- Never leave a grill unattended.
- Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
- Position the grill at least 10 feet away from homes, trees, and other structures.
- Keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water nearby.
- Use long-handled tools to prevent burns.
- Ensure food is cooked thoroughly and stored properly to avoid foodborne illness.
Fireworks: Dazzling but Dangerous
Fireworks are a hallmark of the holiday, but they come with significant risks. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks ignited over 31,000 fires in 2022, causing an estimated $109 million in property damage.
“Fireworks are a beautiful part of the holiday, but safety should always come first,” Waiters said. “A few precautions can keep the night dazzling without unwanted explosions.”
Officials strongly recommend leaving fireworks to the professionals by attending a public display, such as Summerville’s Celebrate Independence coming up this evening at the Chattooga County Ag Building.
For those choosing to set off their own fireworks:
- Keep them away from buildings, cars, and dry grass.
- Never allow children to handle fireworks.
- Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy.
- Wear eye protection and avoid consuming alcohol or drugs while handling explosives.
Broader Holiday Precautions
Beyond fire risks, officials urge vigilance in other areas. If your celebration includes alcohol, be sure to have a designated driver and never shoot fireworks while under the influence. Also, be considerate of veterans who may be affected by the loud noises and to keep pets indoors and secure, as the sounds can cause extreme anxiety and stress for animals. With many celebrations involving pools or open water, constant adult supervision and the use of flotation devices are critical to prevent drowning.
Ultimately, officials stress that community-wide awareness is the best defense. Being mindful of your surroundings and reporting any suspicious or dangerous activities can help ensure a safe and happy Fourth of July for everyone.
