According to the arrest report, deputies were notified after a witness reported seeing a woman exit a vehicle and place a suspicious package in the wood line near Underwood Drive, an area close to the perimeter of Hays State Prison. Deputies with the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to investigate the report.
The woman is identified as Santana Lajuana Jackson, age 34. Authorities say deputies located a laundry detergent box hidden near the wooded area. Inside the box were black Nike shoes, and a cell phone was also found nearby. Investigators contacted officials with Hays State Prison and shared the information they had gathered at the scene.
According to the report, prison officials reviewed surveillance video and observed activity that raised additional concerns. Investigators say the footage appeared to show Jackson swapping shoes with an inmate inside the facility. Prison staff then inspected the shoes and reportedly discovered what was described as a large quantity of methamphetamine concealed inside the soles.
The report states that Jackson later admitted to investigators that the shoes and cell phone recovered near Underwood Drive belonged to her. Authorities allege she intended for the drugs to be brought into the prison for distribution. Special agents with the Georgia Department of Corrections were notified and assisted with the investigation.
Jackson was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chattooga County Jail. She is charged with Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Conspiracy to Commit a Crime. Additional investigation into the incident and any potential involvement of others is ongoing, according to the report.
Officials remind the public that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
