Residents of Northwest Georgia are advised to prepare for a challenging weather day, with forecasts calling for both dangerously high heat index values and the potential for isolated to scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

According to the latest advisory, heat index values are expected to soar to between 100 and 104 degrees across portions of northwest Georgia this afternoon and early evening. Officials urge residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, including staying hydrated, seeking air-conditioned environments, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Compounding the heat, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop, primarily between 2 PM and 3 PM today, with a 60% chance of precipitation. A few of these storms could become strong, bringing gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning. Winds during the day are expected to be light south, shifting to southwest at 5 to 10 mph, with potential gusts up to 15 mph. Today’s high temperature is forecast to be near 88 degrees under partly sunny skies.

Tonight, the chance of showers and thunderstorms remains at 60%, mainly before 8 PM. Temperatures will drop to a low around 73 degrees, with southwest winds around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

The unsettled weather pattern is set to continue through the weekend and into early next week:

Sunday: A slight chance of showers will precede a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 AM. The day will be mostly sunny with a high near 91 degrees, though heat index values could still reach 98 degrees. The chance of precipitation stands at 50%. West winds will be around 5 mph.

Sunday Night: There’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 PM. Skies will be partly cloudy, with a low around 73 degrees. West winds around 5 mph will become calm in the evening.

Monday: The start of the new week brings a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 PM. It will be mostly sunny with a high near 93 degrees. Calm winds will become northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, especially concerning the dual threats of extreme heat and potential severe weather.
