The Cherokee County (Alabama) Sheriff’s Office says one suspect has been taken into custody as authorities continue searching for two other suspects connected to an armed robbery investigation out of Floyd County, Georgia.

Sheriff Jeff Shaver reported that early Sunday morning, deputies and the Centre Police Department located and arrested Jeffrey Lemar Smith, 23, of Gadsden, after he was found hiding in a dumpster off West Main Street near Watson Drive in Centre.

The Sheriff’s Office says personnel from multiple agencies spent several hours searching the area overnight, including the Centre Police Department, Leesburg Police Department, Cherokee County Rescue, and Cherokee County EMA. Officials also used unmanned aerial systems (drones) during the search.

Smith has been charged with Attempt to Elude. Authorities say the armed robbery case remains under active investigation by the Floyd County Police Department (GA), and additional charges are expected.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies located the suspect vehicle on Cedar Bluff Road, which led to a pursuit. The vehicle later crashed on West Main Street, and the suspects ran from the scene heading south. Earlier Sunday morning, officials warned residents about a large law enforcement presence near W. Main Street and S. River Street as the search intensified.

Law enforcement is urging the public to remain alert and report anything suspicious by calling 911 as the search continues for the remaining suspects.
