New numbers released by online data analysts “Stacker” shows how Georgia’s 159 counties rank by percentage of people living below the poverty level. The numbers come from a variety of sources and are tabulated to rank each county in the state.
According to the numbers, the poorest counties in Georgia are in the southern part of the state. Clay County, located in Southwest Georgia on the Alabama line, has only 3,183 people and 1,211 of those are below the poverty level, making Clay County the poorest county in Georgia. Fayette County, just south of Atlanta has the least amount of poverty in the state. With over 106,000 residents, only 6,190 residents are considered below the poverty level.
In Northwest Georgia the county with the highest percentage of people below the poverty level is Gordon County, where 20% are below the poverty level. Gordon is followed closely by both Floyd and Chattooga Counties. 19.9% of Chattooga County residents are below the poverty level and 19.1% of Floyd County residents are considered below the poverty level. Those numbers show that Chattooga County ranks as the 94th poorest county out of 159 counties.

- Polk – 17.9%
- Whitfield – 17.8%
