The Georgia House of Representatives has recently passed two bills concerning the use of speed detection cameras in school zones, sparking debate and setting the stage for further discussion in the State Senate. There are no school zone cameras in Chattooga County, but neighboring Floyd County has a camera in place near Armuchee Primary School on Highway 27 North and is considering another for the Armuchee Elementary School Zone on Highway 140.
The two bills, House Bill 225 and House Bill 651, take opposing stances on the technology. House Bill 225, co-sponsored by State Representative Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee), seeks to outright ban the use of automated traffic enforcement safety devices by local governments and law enforcement agencies. In contrast, House Bill 651 would permit the continued use of these cameras, but establishes specific regulations regarding signage, enforcement times, and the allocation of funds generated from fines. The bill aims to ensure transparency and responsible implementation of the technology.
State Representative Eddie Lumsden, who represents Chattooga County and a portion of Floyd County, voted in favor of both bills. Both bills now move to the State Senate for further consideration, where they are expected to undergo scrutiny and potentially further amendments before a final decision is reached.
