The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has identified the second individual found deceased last month in a Summerville residence, bringing clarity to a grim discovery that launched a double death investigation. The second victim has been identified as 46-year-old Amy Michelle Waits of Summerville.
Chattooga County Coroner Jeremy A. McElhaney confirmed the identification Monday, stating the GBI Medical Examiners Office positively identified Waits. While both victims have now been identified, the cause of their deaths remains under investigation, with autopsy results still pending. Coroner McElhaney also extended a request for prayers for the family during this difficult time.
This identification follows the GBI’s previous announcement last week, which confirmed the first victim as 53-year-old Michael Kevin Bolton of Summerville.
The grim discovery that launched the ongoing investigation occurred on July 22. Two adult bodies were found at a residence on Highway 114, also known as Lyerly Highway, near Chattooga High School. The advanced state of decomposition of the remains initially left many questions about their identities and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Law enforcement officers entered the residence late on a Tuesday after concerned neighbors reported an unsettling lack of activity at the home for several days, coupled with the alarming sight of buzzards circling overhead.
The bodies were promptly transported to the GBI Crime Lab for examination and identification. Chattooga County Coroner Jeremy “Big Mac” McElhaney had previously addressed the challenges faced by investigators in determining identities and causes of death given the condition of the remains.
While both victims have now been positively identified, the GBI’s investigation into the cause and manner of their deaths remains ongoing. Officials have not yet released any information regarding the circumstances that led to their deaths.
