When you drive down Highway 114, the Lyerly Highway, you have probably noticed all of the solar panels located just before you enter Lyerly.  The solar farm was created by Hannah Solar.

4,400 solar panels line the seven-acre tract of land.  Georgia Power signed a 20 year contract to purchase power from the solar farm.

Georgia is home to one of the nation’s fastest-growing solar electricity programs and Georgia’s Public Service Commissioner Lauren “Bubba” McDonald Jr. says he is an advocate for the state growing in renewable solar energy usage. McDonald is promoting solar technology, stating that the field has advanced tremendously in the last few years, while price has continued to drop.

The advent of solar farms will also reduce the need to build future power plants and the money saved can be re-invested into current infrastructure.

Although solar panels, like the ones in Lyerly, cannot run when the sun isn’t present, it will help during peak energy usage hours, when the sun will be up and solar panels will be most active. During these peak hours, the sun is providing the highest amount of energy, and it’s also the peak time when high energy consuming air conditioners are running.
