State Representative Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee) has been tapped to be part of a new initiative aimed by state lawmakers to scrutinize the rapidly increasing cost of insurance for Georgians. Rep. Lumsden will serve as Vice Chair of the newly formed House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Insurance Rates.
The 17-member committee, appointed by Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington), is set to hold its inaugural meeting at the State Capitol on Thursday, August 28, at 10 AM.
Operating during the Georgia General Assembly’s legislative downtime, the committee’s primary mission is to conduct a thorough examination of the insurance industry’s rate-setting practices, profit margins, claims processing, and regulatory compliance. The overarching goal is to ensure that Georgia’s businesses, citizens, and consumers are not being subjected to unjustified rate hikes.
Rep. Lumsden, who represents all of Chattooga County and a portion of Floyd County in Northwest Georgia, will play a key role in guiding the committee’s investigations.
In addition to its initial gathering, the House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee is slated to hold four more hearings across the state throughout the remainder of the year. The findings and any recommended legislation will be compiled into a final report, which is due to be submitted before the General Assembly convenes for its next session in January.
This comprehensive review signals a serious legislative effort to address concerns over insurance affordability and transparency for residents and businesses across Georgia.
