Summerville First Baptist Church is preparing to celebrate its annual Homecoming today, Sunday, August 17th, inviting the community to join in a day of worship, fellowship, and reflection on its deep historical roots in Chattooga County.

The day’s events will kick off with a special service at 10:30 AM, foregoing the usual Sunday School. Attendees will be treated to a sermon by Brother Paul Mason and special musical selections by Mandy Touchton. Following the spiritual nourishment, a communal lunch will be served, featuring traditional homecoming fare such as ham, chicken and dressing, gravy, and rolls. Guests are encouraged to bring their favorite sides and desserts to share.

More than just an annual gathering, the Homecoming celebration is a testament to the church’s enduring legacy, stretching back over 175 years. While officially organized as the First Baptist Church of Summerville in 1848, records indicate the congregation’s presence predates this, initially known as “Damascus” and likely meeting in members’ homes.

Its earliest affiliations connect it to the Coosa Baptist Association, formed in 1836, which encompassed churches across six northwest Georgia counties and later became affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention in 1842. By 1842, the church had already undergone its name transformation, with Coosa Baptist Association minutes identifying it as “Summerville, formerly as Damascus,” boasting 24 members.

The year 1848 marked another significant milestone when the church received a land grant from the Inferior Court, designated for the construction of a dedicated church building. Deacons William Crook and John P. Henry were instrumental in this acquisition. While the church’s organization dates back to the mid-19th century, its current edifice, located at 125 Georgia Avenue across from Summerville City Hall, was constructed in 1937 and officially dedicated on January 11, 1942.

Summerville First Baptist Church extends a warm invitation to everyone – past members, current congregants, and newcomers alike – to join this special Homecoming service and share in the rich history and vibrant community spirit.
