A 19-year-old was arrested Friday night after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 27 at Back Penn Road left a family, including a 5-month-old infant, injured, and the driver attempting to flee the scene. Miguel Jimenez faces multiple charges, including DUI, hit-and-run, and improper use of a turn lane, following the incident.
According to Trooper Doug Shamblin with the Georgia State Patrol, the collision occurred around 11 p.m. on Friday. Jimenez, driving a Jeep Cherokee, was traveling southbound on Highway 27, positioned partially in the central turn lane and partially in the left southbound lane.
At the intersection with Back Penn Road, Jimenez’s Jeep struck a Toyota 4Runner, driven by Jonathan Ryland, which was stationary and awaiting to make a left turn.
Following the impact, Jimenez, who was determined to be intoxicated, attempted to leave the scene of the accident. He was accompanied by an unknown number of occupants who also tried to depart. However, law enforcement quickly apprehended Jimenez.
The occupants of the Toyota 4Runner, including a 5-month-old infant, sustained injuries in the collision. All injured parties were transported to the Atrium Chattooga ER for treatment.
Jimenez has been formally charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI), hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident, and improper use of a turn lane. The investigation into the crash is ongoing by the Georgia State Patrol.
