The State of Georgia has twenty-nine new GBI Special Agents. The new agents were recently sworn in at a ceremony by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI was started back in 1937 after the Georgia General Assembly created the Georgia State Patrol with a special unit known as the Division of Identification, Detection, Prevention and Investigation. In 1940 the name was shortened to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. In 1972, Governor Jimmy Carter reorganized state government and made the GBI an independent agency.
The new agents recently completed their training at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center and have been assigned to various investigative work units across the state. Twenty-seven of these new agents have prior law enforcement experience. Four military branches are also represented.
