A devastating two-vehicle accident on Thursday afternoon claimed the lives of two Centre residents, 19-year-old Lillian McCain and 12-year-old Libby McCain. The collision occurred on Cherokee County Road 29, approximately nine miles northeast of Piedmont.
Cherokee County Coroner, Paul McDonald, confirmed the fatalities, stating he pronounced both victims deceased at the scene.
According to the Alabama State Trooper report, Lillian McCain was driving a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek when it collided with a 2006 Kenworth tractor trailer log truck. The driver of the log truck was identified as 61-year-old Keith L. Nance of Heflin.
Troopers said the accident took place at approximately 3:15 p.m. Thursday on Cherokee County Road 29, just north of County Road 28.
Coroner McDonald expressed his gratitude to the numerous agencies that assisted at the scene, including the Sheriff’s Department Chaplain, Deputies, and SRO, McCord’s Crossroads Fire, Spring Garden Fire, Atrium Floyd EMS, the Rescue Squad, and EMA.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
