Reports indicate that the U.S. Department of Education will announce the release of federal funds for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program (Title IV-B) on Monday. This program is aimed at supporting afterschool and summer learning programs that many Georgia families rely on.
Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods has released a statement in response to this news, expressing appreciation for the Department’s decision to release these funds. He also urged the Department to release the remaining funds without delay, stating that Georgia has consistently demonstrated its ability to be a good steward of federal education dollars.
“I appreciate the U.S. Department of Education taking a step toward releasing federal education funds to Georgia’s districts, schools, and students by releasing funds for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program,” Woods said. “These funds are essential to supporting afterschool and summer learning programs that Georgia families rely on.”
Woods went on to emphasize the importance of ensuring that all approved funds are made available, especially as the new school year is about to begin. He believes that this will help students start strong and provide educators with the support they need.
The 21st Century Community Learning Centers program provides funding to schools and community-based organizations to create afterschool and summer programs that focus on academic enrichment activities, as well as a broad array of additional services designed to complement students’ regular academic programs. These programs often include tutoring, mentoring, and homework assistance, as well as recreational activities, cultural enrichment, and community service opportunities.
With the release of these funds, many Georgia families can look forward to the continuation and expansion of these valuable afterschool and summer programs.
