The African American Museum & Cultural Center in Walker County will open a major exhibit called “Premiere First Ten Years Racial Integration Mega Exhibit” on July 26, 2025. This exhibit will explore the significant changes in Northwest Georgia following the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The museum already offers valuable insights into the history of Appalachian African Americans, from ancient West African civilizations to their experiences in Walker and surrounding counties. The Center uses graphic displays and interactive kiosks to educate visitors of all ages and is managed by the Walker County African American Historical and Alumni Association, Inc. The new exhibit will focus on how desegregation affected local schools like Wallaceville School and Hill School, highlighting the challenges and successes of the integration period. The museum seeks donations or loans of historical items related to this era. Those with artifacts or stories are encouraged to contact Beverly Foster. The museum plays a crucial role in preserving and sharing the stories of African Americans in Georgia. Visitors are invited to explore current exhibits and anticipate the new one in 2025.
