It’s a long way from Summerville to Shanghai, but that’s the journey Chattooga Chamber of Commerce President David Tidmore is on.
Representatives from the Northwest Georgia Joint Development Authority and chamber leaders from Chattooga, Walker, Catoosa and Dade counties will be in China through April 24.
The group also includes representatives from the Dalton-Whitfield County and the Chatsworth-Murray County chambers, along with other economic development officials from across Georgia.
Tidmore said he doesn’t know exactly what’s on the itinerary but the group would be in Shanghai, Beijing, Suzhou and Hangzhou during the nine-day visit.
“The state has done a little preliminary work in setting up meetings with folks in Beijing and Shanghai,” Tidmore said. “We’re going to get in the batter’s box. That’s the only way to get a hit.”
Officials in China are paying for much of the expenses that will be incurred by the Georgia delegation, he said.
“We’re going to do a lot of tourist-type stuff, but they’re carrying us to a lot of factories, too,” Tidmore said.
Jade and pearl factories in Beijing will be among the stops on the trip, along with silk factories in Suzhou and Shanghai. A green tea plantation will be among the stops in Hangzhou.
“Georgia has a lot of (exports to China) such as chicken, peanuts and wood pellets already. Mohawk already has a facility there,” Tidmore said.

The historic Couey House, now located at Dowdy Park in Summerville, is in trouble, and the City of Summerville is not inclined to spend the money to fix it. Summerville City Manager Russell Thompson said that with the tight city budget, an estimated $33,000 to fix the decaying structure is not feasible at this time. City Council members asked the city manager to look into possible grants that could be used to repair the house that was built in the early nineteenth century. Originally the house was located in the Gore area and was restored and moved to Summerville's city park by the Georgia Department of Transportation when Highway 27 was widened. The house's structural supports have broken and the building is infested with termites.
Trion High School's Junior-Senior Prom is Saturday and this year students won't have as far to go as in the past.
For the past four years, the Trion prom has been held in Kingston at the Governor's Mansion. This year the prom is set for 7 p.m. at Circle B Farms in the Perrennial Springs area of Summerville on Fish Hatchery Road.
Trion High School Principal Brian Edge, said the Governor's Mansion had worked well in the past, but was no longer a viable option since the venue has been sold. He said many places were already booked and price is a consideration since Trion has fewer students than many schools, therefore few funds to spend on prom. He said he thinks students will be pleased with the new venue.
AM 1180 wishes all Trion students a safe and happy prom night.
