Investigation Into Plant Bowen Explosion

A preliminary investigation is underway at Plant Bowen in Euharlee, where a large explosion Thursday injured four workers and wiped out the southern wall of the Georgia Power facility.

On Friday, Georgia Power officials assessed the damage and began their first analysis into what malfunctioned in the Unit Two Generator that caused the blast heard for miles across southern Bartow County. The entire plant has been offline since the explosion, and Georgia Power Spokesman Brian Green says it could remain that way for a while.

“At this time we don’t really have an idea of how the soon we’ll be able to get the plant back online or how long the investigation will take,” Green says. “The Unit Two Generator actually exploded, and at the time we we’re bringing it offline for some preventive maintenance. At that time, we had some equipment malfunction with the generator. But, we don’t have any specific details as to why the explosion occurred. Like I said, we’ve just begun the investigation and it’s probably going to take some time before we understand what the underlying cause was.”

Alongside other federal agencies, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has also initiated an investigation into the blast, but their inquiry could take upwards of six months.

Over 400 workers are employed by the plant, which is the largest of its kind in North America. Of those, only four were injured when the blast rattled the facility and plummeted the building into smoke-filled darkness.

The injuries reported were minor, and only one employee was taken to the hospital. He was treated and released later in the day.

State Senator Loudermilk to Seek U.S. Congressional Seat

State Senator Barry Loudermilk, a Bartow County Republican, announced earlier this week that he would see the U.S. Congressional Seat currently held by Dr. Phil Gingrey who has announced that he will run for the seat being vacated by Saxby Chambliss.  Loudermilk has served as the local Republican Party chair in his home county and has also served in both the state house and the state senate.

Loudermilk will be facing opposition in the Republican Primary from former Congressman Bob Barr.   Barr, who has over the past several years aligned himself with the Libertarian Party, has said that he will seek the seat he held formerly in the U.S. House. No Democrats have announced if they will seek the seat.  Chattooga County was in the old Congressional District that was represented by Gingrey until this year when redistricting took effect.

Summerville’s Celebrate Independence Date on Hold

The City of Summerville will have to decide if they want to have the Celebrate Independence Fireworks Display on July 4th or another date.  The council had voted to hold the event on the Fourth of July at a called meeting last month, but they found out that David Parker, who normally uses his equipment to shoot off the fireworks for the city, had committed to doing the City of Rome's fireworks display on the fourth.  The council is now faced with the decision of paying the fireworks vendor an additional $7,500 to shoot off the fireworks, or schedule the event for a different date and use Mr. Parker's equipment.
