Halloween Walk Kicks Off Four Days of Downtown Events

Looking for something to do on Halloween? The Downtown Halloween Walk is hosted by the Summerville/Trion Optimist Club.  The walk will be held on Thursday, October 31 from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.  Over 40 businesses, churches and civic organizations will offer treats to all the little spooks. Maybe you are looking for a scare?  You will not want to miss this year’s Spectacular Spook House located on Hwy. 114 at the Summerville Recreation Department. The haunting begins on Halloween Eve at 6:00 p.m. Only the brave should dare to come!

On Saturday, November 2, Engine 630 of the TN Valley Railroad will steam into Summerville around 1:00 p.m. for an hour and a half lay-over. Don’t miss your last chance for the year to experience the excitement as the engine is turned on the Historic Summerville Turntable.

The 2013 Rattling Gourd Arts Festival will be held at the Chattooga County Civic Center, located at 44 Hwy 48 Summerville, GA 30747. Festival times are Saturday Nov. 2, 10am-6pm, Sunday Nov. 3, 11am-5pm. Some of the favorite, longtime participating artists will be returning, as well as quite a few newcomers from the surrounding area. Whether your interest lies in folk art or fine art, there is something for you.  The Garden Club Café’ will also be open to your delight you taste buds. All of the café’s proceeds from the weekend directly fund beautification projects in the county.

 Maybe you are a car enthusiast. The North Georgia Cruisers will also be hosting a cruise-in on Saturday, November 2, from 11:00p.m.-3:00p.m. on East Washington Street. Delicious hamburgers and hotdogs will be for sale and musical entertainment will also be provided.

Downtown Summerville has so much to offer the residents of Chattooga County and surrounding areas. This weekend is the perfect time to enjoy some beautiful North Georgia fall weather, start your Christmas shopping and enjoy time with your friends and family in Summerville, Georgia.

Mr. Larry Tony Crawford Obit (M)

Mr. Larry Tony Crawford, age 49, of Lyerly, GA, passed away Tuesday October 29, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Crawford was born October 27, 1964, in East Point, GA, the son of the late Otis and Alice Freeman Crawford. Tony was a day worker for Lookout Mtn Community Service and preceded death by a brother, Tommy Crawford.

Survivors include his brothers, Kenneth Crawford, Danny Crawford, sister, Brenda Crawford, aunts and uncles, Martha and James Head, Mary West, Elizabeth Hopkins,  Barbara Bagley, and special care giver Jeff Dotson.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday November 1, 2013 from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Thomas officiating with interment in the Johnson Cemetery.

Tony will  be in state at the Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the service hour.

Mr. Robert G. Treadaway Obit (M)

Mr. Robert G. Treadaway, age 90, of Summerville, GA, passed away Tuesday October 29, 2013 in Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Treadaway was born July 11, 1923, in Floyd County GA, the son of the late Robert Seaborn and Mollie Gaston Treadaway.  He was a self-employed accountant and veteran of WWII, purple heart recipient, and preceded in death by his wife, Mary J. Lowry Treadaway.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Mason Funeral Home.

Mr. James Neal Warren Obit (M)

Mr. James Neal Warren, age 68, of Trion, GA, passed away Tuesday October 29, 2013, at his residence.

Area Author to Speak at Chattooga Library

Rome, GA author Raymond L. Atkins will be appearing on Thursday, November 14, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Summerville Library. Atkins will be speaking about his critically-acclaimed new novel, Camp Redemption, as well as his two other award-winning novels, The Front Porch Prophet and Sorrow Wood.

Atkins was recently awarded the Ferrol Sams Award for Fiction for Camp Redemption. The book was published by Mercer University Press in March of 2013 to critical acclaim. Man Martin, author of Paradise Dogs, called the book, “A beautiful, honest portrayal of faith and the gift of everlasting love.”

Previous accolades for Atkins include the 2008 Georgia Author of the Year Award, the 2009 Independent Publisher Book Award Gold Medal for Best Southeastern Fiction, a nomination for the 2009 Southeastern Booksellers Award, and a nomination for the 2009 Independent Publisher Book Award for Best Popular Fiction.

Copies of all three books will be available for signing.
