Mrs. Peggy L. Jacobs Obit (ER)

Peggy Lee Williams Jacobs suddenly passed away on January 30, 2015. She was 71.

Mrs. Jacobs was born on September 2, 1943 in Roanoke, Alabama to her parents, Earl Vinson and Roxie Dye Williams. She graduated from LaGrange High in LaGrange, GA in 1961. She married Donald Jefferson Jacobs that same year. The Jacobs moved to South Carolina where Donald began his career in the textile industry. After a few years, the Jacobs moved back to Georgia with their two young daughters, ultimately settling in Trion, GA. Peggy worked in the human resources department at Best Manufacturing, Menlo, GA, from where she retired after 30 plus years of service.

The Jacobs were active members of Trion First Baptist Church for many, many years. After Mr. Jacobs passing in 2002, Peggy continued her service to the church by serving on committees, cooking meals, visiting the elderly and tending to those in need. She enjoyed her close circle of friends, dining out, going to movies, and spending time at the pool. She also enjoyed working in her beautiful yard at home.

Her primary past time over the last four years was spoiling her granddaughter, Bella. Undoubtedly the Walt Disney Corporation will realize a significant drop in revenue from their line of princess merchandise as a result of Peggy’s departure from this world.

However, Peggy’s faith in Christ was the constant beacon of her life. She navigated tough times, and celebrated good times, through prayer and Bible study. Perhaps this is why she loved lighthouses so much. Likewise, images of cardinals also held a special significance for her, as they reminded her of her husband, Don.

To fully express how richly Peggy was loved in life, and continues to be cherished in our memories, is impossible.

Peggy is survived by her father, Earl Vinson Williams; her daughters Donna Jacobs and April Jacobs Howell, son-in-law Thomas Keith Howell and her granddaughter Isabella Grace Howell; nephew Henry Howard Jacobs, III, his wife Melissa McDonald Jacobs, their children Hanna, Hunter and Hank; nephew Jeff Jacobs, his wife Kristy Shults Jacobs and their son Ethan; and special family friend Melody Becker. She is preceded in death by her husband and mother.

Family and friends of Mrs. Jacobs will be received Monday, February 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville, GA. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 3rd at 1:00 pm at Trion First Baptist Church, Trion, GA.

Honorary Pall Bearers are Henry Howard Jacobs, III, Jeff Jacobs, Leo Lanier, Dennis Ivey, Todd Thomas, Bob Roper and Jeffery Richardson.

The family of Peggy Jacobs requests that donations be made to Trion First Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.

Bill Passes to Cover Autism Therapy for Children Under 6

The Georgia state Senate has passed a bill requiring insurance companies to cover autism therapy for children younger than 6.

Lawmakers passed the bill, 54-0 on Thursday. Supporters say early intervention can help children with autism learn to speak and lower later health care costs.

The bill would cap coverage at $35,000 and wouldn't apply to companies with 10 or fewer workers. It is the first piece of legislation voted on by the Senate this year.

Sponsor Republican Sen. Charlie Bethel says one in 64 children in Georgia will be diagnosed on the autism spectrum. He says other states have passed similar legislation.

"Thirty-eight states have determined that this is the most efficient mechanism for the state to do to see that this treatment is available," says Bethel. "And we think that they're right. If our peers in the House have issues or concerns about that, we're going to listen to them. We're going to talk to them and say 'What is your answer, what is your solution?'"

Senate Bill 1 now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration. A similar proposal stalled there last year. House Speaker David Ralston has said he doesn't support higher insurance costs for small business owners.

Georgia’s Youth Birding Competition Turns 10

Georgia’s Youth Birding Competition turns 10 this spring, marking a decade of connecting young people with wildlife and positively impacting conservation in our state.

Coordinator Tim Keyes of the state Department of Natural Resources is enthusiastic about the future of the competition, including its reach beyond state lines as a model for the national youth birding foundation, Race 4 Birds. Formed in 2014, Race 4 Birds already has about five events scheduled.

“The exciting thing is the Race 4 Birds startup and how the Georgia YBC is multiplying,” said Keyes, a wildlife biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Nongame Conservation Section.

He noted that the Youth Birding Competition also has developed “amazing competitors” who have gone on to study biology in college. Some former birding novices are now veterans, and bringing younger children under their wing in birding.

Keyes said it is this effect that makes him is hopeful for another 10 years. “We’ve really moved a whole group of kids from the ground level up through expert birders. And I’d love to keep that going."

The fun gets going April 25-26, when the 24-hour statewide birdathon for teams varying in ages from kindergarteners to high school seniors returns. The deadline to register is March 31. Complete details are at www.georgiawildlife.com/youthbirdingcompetition.

The competition and an accompanying T-shirt Art Contest are sponsored by DNR’s Wildlife Resources Division; The Environmental Resources Network Inc., or TERN, friends group of the Nongame Conservation Section; and, others including the Georgia Ornithological Society and the Atlanta and Albany Audubon societies. A banquet and awards ceremony will be held April 26 at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center near Mansfield.

Teams register by one of four age divisions and compete against other groups their age. Participants can also volunteer to raise money for conservation organizations.

The Youth Birding Competition is free and designed for youth of all skill levels. Those new to birding can take advantage of mentoring opportunities offered through the competition.

Contestants spotted some 200 bird species and raised more than $2,600 for conservation last year. Fundraising by this year’s teams could push the total since the competition’s start past $20,000, another milestone. Fundraising is a voluntary component of the event.

The 2015 competition begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 25, and ends at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 26. Groups may use as much or as little of that time to count as many birds as possible throughout Georgia.

Although teams can start birding anywhere in the state, they must turn in their checklists at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center by 5 p.m. that Sunday. While judges examine and score checklists, participants are treated to a live animal show followed by an awards banquet packed with prizes.

The Youth Birding Competition also includes a T-shirt Art Contest. Deadline to enter is 4 p.m. March 9. Participation in the birding competition is encouraged but not required to enter the T-shirt Art Contest.

There is no charge for either contest, aside from the optional cost of overnight lodging at Charlie Elliott. Also, teams can share photos and updates on what birds they’re seeing or hearing on Twitter and Instagram. Simply tweet your photos or post them on Instagram with the hashtag #YBC2015. Tag us on Twitter @GeorgiaWild and on Instagram @GeorgiaWildlife.

Gordon County Man Arrested for Rape at Fire Station

On January 28th the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a sexual assault against a young woman in Sonoraville.

An investigation was initiated by the Sheriff’s Detective Division which has resulted in the arrest of Aaron Levi Trumbull, age 19, of 9074 Fairmount Highway.

The investigation revealed that the incident occurred inside the fire station at Sonoraville in the early morning hours.

Detectives understand that Trumbull was an applicant for a ‘paid-per-call’ position in the County Fire Department, but had not completed the hiring process.

Detectives also understand that Trumbull did not have permission to enter the fire station, which is not manned around the clock.

Detectives have interviewed a number of witnesses and collected physical evidence.

Trumbull was arrested Thursday evening at the Sheriff’s Office and subsequently charged with Rape.

He is currently being held in jail pending bond proceedings.
