LaFayette Man Arrested on Chattooga Warrant

Police in LaFayette arrested a convicted sex offender last week on warrants from both Chattooga and Walker Counties.

Forty-one year old Melton Andrew Padgett was arrested at a Lakesite Drive residence off Pledger Parkway in LaFayette.

One of the outstanding warrants was for failure to register as a sex offender.

Lower Oil Prices May Temper 2015 Food Price Inflation

Oil prices began declining in the last quarter of 2014, continuing their descent to just above $45 a barrel in January 2015 from $105 in July 2014.

Barrel prices have not dipped this low since the end of the Great Recession in 2009.

Through their impact on transportation costs and the cost of operating farm machinery, oil prices play a role in retail food prices, and declining oil prices could ease grocery store inflation.

However, the effect is likely to be modest because processing costs and retailing overhead are larger cost components of retail food prices.

Prices of foods requiring little processing, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, are more likely to be affected by lower oil prices than processed foods such as cereals and bakery products.

As oil prices fell in 2009, fresh produce prices decreased 4.8 percent, while prices for cereals and bakery products rose 3.2 percent.

Despite lower oil prices, ERS currently predicts overall food prices to rise between 2 and 3 percent in 2015, closely in line with 2014 food price inflation.

Information on ERS's food price forecasts can be found in ERS's Food Price Outlook data product.

Find Out About a Career in Outdoors Communications

Interested in developing a writing career or becoming involved in communication about the outdoors?  An all-day seminar, “Becoming an Outdoor Communicator,” is scheduled for March 7, 2015 at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center.

This seminar, hosted by Georgia author (radio podcaster, YouTube video producer and even stand-up comedian) William Hovey Smith, will provide information on the potential for selling traditional outdoor-related materials to newspapers, magazines, radio, video and TV markets.  Additionally, emerging opportunities in social media, such as blogs, YouTube, Flickr, Pinterest and e-book publications will be discussed.

The seminar begins at 9 a.m. at the Brooke Ager Discovery Area at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center and is limited to only 25 participants.  A wildlife cooking demonstration will take place at noon, with further presentations continuing post-lunch through 4 p.m.  Informal discussions with Smith and other outdoor writers and videographers will follow for an additional hour.

William Hovey Smith sold his first magazine articles in the 1970’s and has published 15 books, 9 e-books, 300 YouTube videos, made multiple television appearances, produced the “Hovey’s Outdoor Adventures” podcast radio show, and written thousands of newspaper, magazine and outdoor blog articles.  He currently is the corresponding editor for Gun Digest Annual covering blackpowder guns, and regularly appears on the “Welcome to Our North” television program.

Smith’s hunting adventures have taken him all over North America and trips to Europe and Africa.  His books include Backyard Deer Hunting: Converting Deer to Dinner for Pennies per Pound, Crossbow Hunting, Practical Bowfishing and a new e-book series (eight books) on muzzleloading guns.

Interested future communicators need to pre-register for the seminar. Cost is $50 (with a money-back guarantee from Hovey!).  Call the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center at 770-784-3059 or email amber.mooney@dnr.state.ga.us to register.  Payment by check, cash or Visa/Mastercard accepted.

Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center is located near Mansfield, less than an hour southeast of Atlanta off Interstate 20.  The address is 543 Elliott Trail, Mansfield 30

A four-year-old child struck by a vehicle on Friday night is in good condition at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, hospital officials said.

Campbell Epting, her father, James Epting and her six-year old brother, were struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe on Friday night on Shorter Avenue near Sherwood Drive.

Campbell Epting is being treated at Scottish Rite Childrens Hospital, a spokeswoman said on Saturday.

The driver, identified as Regino Garcia Pu, 41, of Rome, was trying to avoid another wreck on Shorter Avenue during icy condition, according to PFC Corey Bowers of the Rome Police Department.

Garcia Pu was heading east and was attempting  to change lanes when he hit a patch of ice, did a 180 degree turn and struck the family on the sidewalk.

The family was unconscious when emergency officials arrived, poice said, and were taken to Floyd Medical Center by ambulance.
