Habitat for Humanity – Coosa Valley continues to seek volunteers to assist with area home builds. The Coosa Valley Chapter serves Floyd, Polk and Chattooga Counties in Northwest Georgia.
According to a report released yesterday, last Tuesday, a call from a woman in the Haywood Valley area sent deputies to the scene of a domestic incident where a woman said her daughter had attacked her with a machete and fired shots into her residence. When a deputy arrived on the scene and spoke with the victim, she said that her daughter was inside the house at the time and that there were two firearms inside the residence. Deputies called out over the patrol car’s loud speaker and the daughter came out without incident. Forty-one-year-old Christa Leeann McWilliams was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment, terroristic threats and acts, felony possession of a firearm or knife in the commission of a crime, criminal trespass and interfering with a call for emergency assistance.

Yesterday, State Senator Chuck Hufstetler (R-Rome) held a press conference along with Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to introduce Senate Bill 84. SB 84 would provide for financial protections, delay in disbursements and liability protections for elder and disabled adults who may be victims of financial exploitation. This bill would protect citizens who are mentally or physically disabled and citizens 65 and over.

Georgia gas prices declined at the pump compared to a week ago. Georgia drivers are now paying an average price of $3.34 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average is 5 cents less than a week ago, 52 cents more than a month ago, and 10 cents more than this time last year. It now costs $50.10 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Drivers are now paying almost $2.00 more to fill up at the pump compared to a year ago.
The Friends of James H. Sloppy Floyd State Park recently marked what would have been the 103rd birthday of the state park’s namesake with a post on social media. Many younger Chattooga County residents are familiar with the state park, but have no idea where the park got it’s unique name.
