The Chattooga County Chamber will host their annual “Heart Health Luncheon” this month.  The annual event is sponsored by Advent Health Redmond and will take place at the Chattooga County Chamber of Commerce located on Highway 48 in Summerville coming up on Tuesday, February 21st at Noon.  The public is welcome to attend. Riley Benter RN, BSN and Director of Outpatient Cardiovascular Services at Advent Health Redmond will be the keynote speaker. Man Charged With Public Intoxication At Circle K

A forty-two-year-old man was arrested at the Circle K on Commerce Street shortly after 1 AM on Monday morning and charged with public intoxication.  Summerville Police responded to the Circle K and found the man inside the store.  Police say that Moises Villana was unsteady on his feet and visibly intoxicated.  Police say that they could smell alcohol on the man’s breath and his eyes were bloodshot.  Villana was arrested and taken to the Chattooga County Jail.  Police say that Villana’s automobile was parked outside the store.

Lookout Mountain CASA Receives Generous Donation

Lookout Mountain CASA, Inc. Executive Director, Jeff Rowlls recently accepted a generous donation from the Jewell Foundation, Corky Jewell, former Chairman of Hutcheson Medical Center, presented the check to Lookout Mountain CASA.  Lookout Mountain CASA, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides volunteers to children who have suffered from abuse and neglect. CASA volunteers are central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with
dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving home. Lookout Mountain CASA, Inc. serves Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade and Walker counties. In these four counties, there are over 330 children in foster care many of which are in need of a CASA volunteer. Lookout Mountain CASA, Inc. is always in need of caring adults to serve as volunteers.

Summerville Woman Charged With Shoplifting At Dollar General

A twenty-seven-year-old Summerville woman was arrested on Sunday after she allegedly “skip scanned” several items at the Dollar General Store located on Commerce Street in Summerville.  Police say that Haley Nicole Nichols was caught on surveillance video skip scanning some press-on nails, nail glue and other cosmetic items.  The store manager called police and showed them the video of Nichols scanning some items, and failing to scan other items.  Police traveled to the suspects home and questioned her about the incident.  The suspect produce the receipt from Dollar General that confirmed the store manager’s allegations. Nichols was charged with theft by shoplifting.

Mr. Rondall Alvin Hughes, Obit (C)

Mr. Rondall Alvin Hughes, age 67 of Summerville, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2023 at his residence.

Mr. Hughes was born in Tampa, Florida on August 6, 1955, son of the late Cecil Hughes and Betty Jo Hughes.  He was retired from the Hillshire Farms and was of the Christian Faith.  He was an avid fisherman and loved motorcycles and playing pool.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Hughes and Robert Hughes.

Mr. Hughes is survived by a daughter, Karla Hughes; a son, Brent Hughes; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Manuel Owens and Sharon and Nathan Deering; granddaughter, Cailin Hughes; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hughes will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Tuesday, February 7, 2023 from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 P.M.  A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Martha Bartlett Gaines, Obit (ER)

MRS. MARTHA BARTLETT GAINES, age 86, of Back Berryton Road, entered her Heavenly home Monday, February 6, 2023 at her residence. She was born August 12, 1936 in Chattoogaville, Georgia, daughter of the late Ellon Carr Bartlett and James Alfred Bartlett. She was a member of New Antioch Baptist Church. After raising her children, she was employed by Century Glove Company and later by Mount Vernon Mills before her retirement. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Joe B. Gaines whom she married July 2, 1953; brothers, Wesley, Roland, Gordon, Bill, James, and Dennis Bartlett, J.T. and Jim McAteer; sisters, infant, Barbara Lee Bartlett, Winola Brown, Ola Copeland, Lena Mae Nations, Mildred Gilreath, Bell Atkins, Sybil Hayes and Christine Bohannon and also great, great granddaughter, Joselyn Phibbs.

Martha loved the Lord. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and always trusted in Him through all her difficulties. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother helping to raise and take care of all her children. She always has Sunday dinner all the way back to the beginning of her marriage when family would come to visit. After retirement, she began quilting, making numerous, all handmade, quilts for all her family. She never believed in being idle, work was the name of the game.

Survivors include her children, James Patrick (Pat) and Karen Gaines and Brenda Gail and Nelson Lee Wilson; grandchildren, Ethan Gaines, Cynthia and Nick Swords, April and Derek Adams; great grandchildren, Dylan and Levi Adams, Kayla, Caitlin, Aleigha and Scottie Satterfield; great, great grandchildren, Lilah Marie Gazaway, Parker Phibbs, and on the way Paxton Phibbs.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 11th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J.D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor Andy Hutchins, Pastor Harold Helton, and Pastor Jason Lee officiating, interment in Summerville Cemetery. Active Pallbearers Dylan Adams, Levi Adams, Scottie Satterfield, Ethan Gaines, James Lee Bartlett and Randy Hunter. Honorary Pallbearers members of New Antioch Baptist Church, Care Givers of Tapestry Hospice, Staff of Oakview Nursing and Rehab Center, Joe Fay and Cathy Denson and Marilyn and Atteka Abdou. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 p.m. until the hour of service at the Funeral Home.

Fatal Mobile Home Fire In Cherokee County, Alabama

Multiple fire departments responded to a fatal mobile home fire on Highway 9 in Cherokee County, Alabama last Friday night.  The fire was on Highway 9, just south of the Centre city limits.  Fire departments from Centre, Spring Creek and Ellisville responded to the fire around midnight Friday and remained on the scene until 5 AM on Saturday morning.  Cherokee County Coroner Paul McDonald identified the victim as James C. McKinney of Centre.  The fire is under investigation by the Cherokee County, Alabama Sheriff’s Office and the fire marshal.
