The Fort Payne Police Department has confiscated a number of counterfeit $20 bills recently passed at various locations in the city. Capt. Gary Bell said the fake money started turning up in deposits made to banks on Tuesday. He said so far officers have about a half dozen of the counterfeit $20s. Bell said the counterfeiters didn`t even bother to change the serial number, which is the same on each bill,. It`s suspected the counterfeiters came into the city from another area, passed the bills, then left. He said most of the bills were passed at convenience stores. Similar crimes happened around this same time last year. This time, the counterfeiters hit four different Fort Payne businesses, mostly convenience stores. Bell said the counterfeiters` typical method of operation is to go to a store, buy a small amount of gas or merchandise with the fake money, then pocket real money in change. Anyone who believes they have come into possession of counterfeit money should contact him by calling 256-845-1414.
