The Trion Bulldogs will play the Darlington Tigers on the road tonight for the Region 7A Championship.

It has been 19 years since the Trion Bulldogs have won a region championship.  The current championship drought is the longest such stretch in the program’s 89 year history.  The Bulldogs had a shot at a championship last year at home against the Bowdon Red Devils but came up short.  Trion will get another shot tonight on the road in Rome at Chris Hunter Stadium against the undefeated and 6th ranked Darlington Tigers.

Trion enters tonight’s contest unranked with an 8-1 record overall and 5-0 in region play.  The Darlington Tigers are ranked 6th in the state according to the AJC and are 9-0 on the year and 5-0 in region play.  Trion suffered it’s only loss at home this year to Model but has been perfect since.  Many pundits had picked Pepperell to be the primary challenger to Darlington this year for the region crown but a dominating road win by the Bulldogs over Pepperell two weeks ago has set up tonight’s showdown against the Tigers.

Tonight is the 20th game overall in the series.  Darlington holds a commanding 16-3 lead in the series and an 8 game winning streak against Trion.  The last time the Bulldogs defeated Darlington was a 21-14 win in Trion back in 2009 under former head coach David Humphreys.

With Trion’s 41-0 win over Armuchee last week, the Bulldogs secured a 1st round home playoff game but have their eyes on a bigger prize tonight.  WZQZ will be video streaming the game live on the WZQZ Facebook page.  The game will also be broadcast live on AM 1180 and 99.1 FM.  Join WZQZ’s Ben Groce and Jeremy Burke at 7pm for the pregame show with kickoff to follow at 7:30 pm.

Chattooga’s football season ended last week with a 33-12 win over Coosa.  However, with a final record of 2-8 and 1-5 region record, the Indians finished in 7th place in the region and were eliminated from playoff contention.
