Former Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Blake Elsberry has announced his intention to run for the Georgia State Senate in the 53rd District, releasing a public statement outlining his decision and priorities. The announcement comes after Senator Colton Moore signaled interest in running for Congress, opening the door for a new candidate in the district.

Elsberry said the decision followed “prayer and thoughtful consideration,” adding that his focus as senator would be on supporting farmers, strengthening agriculture, improving rural healthcare access, and pushing for fiscal responsibility. He said he intends to work with local governments and fellow legislators to continue efforts toward eliminating the state income tax and reducing financial burdens on families. Elsberry pledged to release a detailed campaign platform in the days ahead.

However, Elsberry’s announcement comes at a politically complicated time. After being defeated in the 2024 Republican Primary, he has since become the subject of a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe involving a failed Menlo broadband expansion project and the county’s dealings with Zentell Communications.

The GBI launched its investigation months ago but confirmed as recently as October 29, 2025, that it has no new public updates.

Despite the controversy, Elsberry says he is committed to earning voters’ trust. He ended his announcement by asking for prayers and support, adding that he hopes to represent Northwest Georgia’s values in the State Senate.
