Despite ice‑cold temperatures and snowfall, the 2026 Pinewood Derby Race for Pack 38 Cub Scouts roared ahead as planned, proving that a little winter weather couldn’t slow down Scout spirit.
Families bundled up and made their way to the race venue, where Scouts proudly presented the wooden cars they had designed and built over the past several weeks. Inside, the atmosphere was warm with excitement as cars raced down the track and cheers filled the room.
Pack 38 held their annual pinewood derby on Saturday January 31 at the Ag Center in Summerville. A popular Cub Scout Activity, pinewood derbies feature unpowered miniature wood cars that compete in timed races on a sloped track.

Our scouts have been continuing their adventures and fun activities despite the weather. During the month of January, Pack 38 scouts have been exploring the possibilities of a block of wood. Scouts received a 7.4 inch long block of pinewood, four plastic wheels, and four metal axles to create their own masterpiece of a racing vehicle. The biggest rule is the car has to weigh less than five ounces. With help from their parents and leaders scouts took their block of wood, while learning critical thinking skills, working with tools and letting their imaginations flow.
On Saturday, as the racers arrived, their cars were checked in and measured and weighed to ensure they met the parameters of the derby. The cars were given a unique number and placed in the race holding area. Scouts anxiously awaited to see their car in action. Each car raced down the track as scouts, their families, and friends cheered everyone on!
This year’s cars included a hotdog, an ambulance with a flashing light, a chicken, a paint palette, several arrows, and a titanic ship along with many other creations.
“The weather may have been cold, but the energy in the room was anything but,” said Justin Rader, a leader with Pack 38. “The Scouts worked hard on their cars, and we weren’t going to let snow stop them from showing off their creativity.” Parents shared, “Watching the Scouts cheer each other on was the best part. You could see how proud they were—not just of winning, but of racing something they built themselves.”
Each Scout had multiple chances to race, with awards given for speed as well as design and craftsmanship. From sleek racers to colorful, imaginative designs, every car reflected the effort and pride of its builder. Parents and volunteers applauded the Scouts not only for their racing success, but also for demonstrating good sportsmanship—cheering for fellow racers and celebrating each other’s accomplishments.
The Pinewood Derby remains one of the most anticipated events of the Cub Scout year, teaching hands‑on skills, patience, and confidence. Pack leaders thanked volunteers and families who braved the weather to make the 2026 race another memorable success. This event always promises excitement for parents and kids alike crafting their cars and watching them race.
As the final trophies were awarded, Scouts left with smiles, stories to share, and memories that will last far longer than the winter cold outside.
