Fire officials are warning that high fire danger conditions are expected today, Sunday, across much of North Georgia, with the threat lasting from the morning hours into the evening.
Forecasters say relative humidity levels will fall to 30 percent or lower for four or more hours today, creating a very dry environment that can allow fires to start and spread more easily. In addition, southeast winds of 8 to 13 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 20 miles per hour, will increase the risk by helping flames move quickly through dry grass, leaves, and brush.
Officials say the combination of low humidity, breezy winds, and extremely dry fuels means any fire that develops could become dangerous in a short amount of time. Even a small spark from outdoor burning, machinery, or discarded smoking materials could ignite a wildfire under these conditions.
Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid outdoor burning today and to use extra caution with anything that could cause a spark. Fire safety officials stress that conditions like these can allow fires to grow rapidly before crews can get them under control.
People across North Georgia are urged to remain alert throughout the day and follow any local fire safety guidance that may be issued.
