A Trion man is dead following a Friday night shooting in Rossville, and a suspect is now facing a murder charge.

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson says deputies were called to a home on Ridgewood Street just after 9 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived, they found 59-year-old Jerry Hightower of Trion dead in the front yard.

According to the sheriff, witnesses told deputies the suspected shooter was sitting on the porch of a house across the street. The suspect was identified as James Richard Nowlin, who was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators say Hightower had been doing maintenance work at a house across from Nowlin’s residence. Witnesses reported that the two men got into an argument over a bright work light that was shining toward Nowlin’s house before the shooting happened.

Nowlin has been booked into the Walker County Jail without bond and is charged with one count of murder.
