New Georgia Milestones results are providing a look at how Chattooga County students performed in mathematics, science and social studies during the 2025-2026 school year, with the results showing both areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.

The latest data released by the Georgia Department of Education includes results from the Georgia Milestones Assessment System, the statewide testing program used to measure how well students have learned the knowledge and skills contained in Georgia’s academic standards.

Students take End-of-Grade, or EOG, Milestones assessments in grades three through eight. For the subjects included in the current release, mathematics is tested across grades three through eight, science is tested in grades five and eight, and social studies is tested in eighth grade.

Milestones performance is divided into four achievement levels: Beginning Learner, Developing Learner, Proficient Learner and Distinguished Learner. A student reaching the Proficient level has demonstrated proficiency in the knowledge and skills expected for that grade or course, while Distinguished Learners demonstrate advanced proficiency.

In the newly released results, 29.1 percent of Chattooga County students scored Proficient Learner or above in mathematics across the tested grades.

One significant bright spot came from Menlo Elementary School, where 64.7 percent of third-grade students reached the Proficient Learner level or higher in mathematics. That performance placed Menlo sixth among the top individual school-and-grade mathematics results in an eight-school-system Northwest Georgia comparison.

In science, 24.3 percent of Chattooga County students tested at the Proficient Learner level or above.

The county’s combined Proficient Learner-and-above percentage in social studies was 16.2 percent.

The regional comparison included Chattooga County Schools along with Floyd County, Rome City, Polk County, Gordon County, Calhoun City, Bartow County and Cartersville City school systems.

The results released this month do not yet provide the complete picture of student performance for the 2025-2026 school year.

English Language Arts Milestones results are being released separately this year because 2025-2026 was the first administration of ELA assessments aligned with Georgia’s revised K-12 English Language Arts standards. The Georgia Department of Education says additional test-development and standard-setting work must be completed before those results can be reported. The ELA results are expected later in 2026.

Statewide, Georgia students showed improvement in the subjects that have been released. The percentage of students reaching Proficient Learner or above increased or remained steady on 12 of 13 End-of-Grade and End-of-Course mathematics, science and social studies assessments.

Some statewide mathematics results reached their highest levels since the Georgia Milestones system began, including fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade mathematics.

Milestones scores are one tool used by schools, educators and families to evaluate how students are performing against state academic standards. The results can help identify subjects and grade levels where students are succeeding as well as areas where additional instructional support may be needed.
