A Cherokee County man died Sunday night following a farm accident in the McCord’s Crossroads community.

According to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched at approximately 8:30 PM Sunday, September 6, after receiving a report of a missing person at a residence in the community.

The missing man, identified as Barry Kerr, had reportedly been bushhogging with a skid steer and had not returned home.

The Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the McCord’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department, Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency and Cherokee County Rescue Squad. Family members, neighbors and first responders began searching the area using ATVs, drones and four-wheel-drive vehicles. The Spring Garden Volunteer Fire Department also responded with its rescue ATV.

Shortly after the search began, the skid steer was found overturned in a body of water.

Floyd EMS was dispatched, while first responders at the scene began efforts to reach and remove Kerr from the equipment.

The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office responded and worked alongside first responders during the recovery operation. Kerr died from injuries sustained in the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cherokee County Coroner Paul McDonald said his office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kerr’s death and extended sympathy and prayers to his family and others affected by the accident.

McCord’s Crossroads Fire Chief Lindsey thanked the responding agencies, family members and neighbors who helped with the search and recovery efforts.

The accident occurred Sunday evening, with the Coroner’s Office issuing information about the incident on Monday, September 7.
