Randy Owen Documentary to Premiere on Alabama Public Television This Saturday

Fans of country music and Alabama’s most iconic band will get an inside look at the life of Randy Owen this weekend as My Home’s in Alabama: The Randy Owen Story premieres on Alabama Public Television.

The documentary will air on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. Central Time and will also be available for streaming through PBS digital platforms and the PBS Video App.

Produced by Jacksonville State University’s Longleaf Studios, the film highlights Owen’s remarkable journey from his humble beginnings in Fort Payne, in neighboring DeKalb County, Alabama, where he worked as a  farmhand, to becoming the co-founder and lead singer of the legendary country group Alabama.

The documentary explores the band’s extraordinary success, including 43 number-one singles and more than 75 million albums sold worldwide, cementing Alabama’s place among the most successful country music acts in history.

Viewers will also hear personal stories and reflections from Randy Owen himself, fellow Alabama band member Teddy Gentry, and acclaimed singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson, offering a closer look at Owen’s career, friendships, and lasting impact on country music.

The production was created through a collaborative effort involving Jacksonville State University faculty and students, showcasing the university’s growing reputation for documentary filmmaking.

New Felony Charge Filed in Day-After-Christmas Armed Robbery Case

Another felony charge has been filed against a man accused in an armed robbery at the former State Line Tavern near the Alabama state line on Dec. 26.

According to Floyd County Jail records, 23-year-old Jeffrey Lemar Smith of Gadsden is accused of pointing a gun at a man inside the establishment and demanding he empty his pockets. Smith is now charged with criminal attempt to commit armed robbery.

Jail records indicate Smith was already facing multiple charges tied to the incident, including robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Authorities say Smith was later found hiding in a dumpster in Centre, Alabama, following a pursuit involving Alabama law enforcement. Investigators say two other suspects remain at large.
